Jean Mensa, Electoral Commission Chairperson, reaffirmed that Ghana’s citizens solely hold the power to elect their next president. Addressing a press briefing in Accra, she emphasized the EC’s impartial role.
Mensa underscored that the EC doesn’t determine election outcomes, contrary to misconceptions. The commission’s role is to facilitate, not decide.
“The power lies with the good people of our dear country,” Mensa stressed, reiterating the democratic principle.
Ghanaians, she said, exclusively hold the authority to choose their leader. The EC’s role is to declare the winner.
Mensa’s statement comes ahead of Ghana’s 2024 general elections, scheduled for December 7.
As the electoral body, the EC ensures a free and fair process. However, the ultimate decision rests with citizens.
“The candidate given the power to lead by citizens will be declared president,” Mensa clarified.
This assertion reinforces the democratic tenet of citizens’ sovereignty. The EC’s impartiality is crucial.
