A taxi driver in Ghana has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his girlfriend.
Paul Evename, 35, was found guilty of intentionally killing his 20-year-old girlfriend, Jennifer Atieku, a student at the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA).
The verdict came after a jury unanimously agreed that Evename had murdered Atieku following her decision to end their relationship.
The court heard that Evename had been stalking Atieku after she had blocked his phone number. When he finally confronted her on campus, a heated argument ensued, culminating in Evename stabbing Atieku multiple times in her hostel.
Despite Evename’s attempts to defend himself by claiming self-defense, the prosecution presented compelling evidence that proved his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Five witnesses testified against him, and the jury found his claims unconvincing.
During the sentencing, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo expressed her deep sympathy for both families but emphasized that the law mandated a life sentence for such a heinous crime.
She stated, “Painful as the death of Jennifer is and the need to do justice as the case demands, I wish it lies in my power to give a punishment to the convict other than for life.”
Evename, who accepted the verdict, apologized to both families and acknowledged his wrongdoing. However, his request for a delay in sentencing due to a wound was denied by the court.
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help for those in abusive relationships.
