Roma have dismissed manager Daniele De Rossi just four matches into the new Serie A season. De Rossi, who replaced Jose Mourinho at the Stadio Olimpico in January, failed to secure a victory this season, with three draws and a home loss to Empoli last month.

Following a 1-1 draw against Genoa on Sunday, Roma sits in 16th place in the Serie A standings. A club statement noted, “The decision is made in the interest of the team, allowing us to quickly return to the desired path at this early stage of the season.”

“To Daniele, who will always have a home in the Giallorossi club, we extend our heartfelt thanks for his passionate and dedicated work over these months,” the club expressed.

De Rossi’s tenure at Roma began impressively; in his first 11 league matches, the team lost only once, earning 26 points from a possible 33 and climbing from ninth to fifth in the table. They also reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they were eliminated by Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Last season’s sixth-place finish qualified them for this year’s Europa League, which includes a trip to Tottenham on November 28.

This summer, Roma signed Artem Dovbyk, last season’s La Liga top goalscorer from Girona, and veteran German defender Mats Hummels on a free transfer.

However, several players have departed, including Chris Smalling, who joined Al-Fayha in the Saudi Pro League, Tammy Abraham, who moved to AC Milan on loan, and Romelu Lukaku, who signed with Napoli after his loan spell. Andrea Belotti, Rui Patricio, and Leonardo Spinazzola have also left in recent months.

De Rossi, now 41, spent 22 years with Roma as a player from 1997 to 2019, making 616 appearances and contributing to Italy’s 2006 World Cup victory.

The Friedkin Group, which recently had a proposed takeover of Everton fall through, holds a 95.97% stake in the club.
