The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has initiated an investigation following a shooting incident in Kumasi that left a police officer injured.
During the National Democratic Congress (NDC) “Enough is Enough” demonstration, chaos ensued as police used tear gas to disperse crowds that clashed with law enforcement.
The protest turned violent when demonstrators attempted to breach the premises of the Electoral Commission, resulting in confrontations with police.
While the precise cause of the altercation is still unclear, one protester was injured and required hospital treatment.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the police reported, “The demonstration concluded peacefully at all locations except for an isolated incident in Kumasi.
There, despite prior agreements, demonstrators attempted to enter the Electoral Commission’s premises and threw stones at police.”
The police managed to restore order, but one officer was injured and is currently receiving medical care. Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has reached out to the injured officer to convey his well wishes.
The police expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including the organizers, demonstrators, Electoral Commission, media, and the public, for their cooperation during the protest.
“The Inspector-General and the leadership of the Police Service extend their heartfelt thanks to all officers nationwide for their unwavering commitment to security and order in our nation,” the statement concluded.
