The Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MOMAG) has issued a serious warning to the government regarding the devastating effects of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
During a recent interview, MOMAG, which encompasses various associations, organizations, and unions, voiced its strong opposition to these activities due to their harmful impact on the environment and local communities.
MOMAG has criticized the government’s insufficient response to the galamsey crisis, asserting that urgent and decisive action is urgently needed.
National Secretary Kingsley Amoako Atta emphasized the critical nature of the situation, cautioning that continued neglect could lead to severe repercussions.
He stated that if effective measures are not implemented by the end of September, MOMAG members nationwide will halt their operations in protest.
This proposed strike aims to highlight the serious environmental damage caused by galamsey and to push the government to take the necessary actions with the urgency it deserves.
MOMAG members believe their planned action could intensify the demand for a stronger governmental response to illegal mining. “With the government’s inaction, we have no choice but to consider a nationwide strike, which will disrupt momo transactions, bill payments, salary disbursements, and overall financial inclusion,” they warned.
