The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has launched the “Make Fashion Inclusive” program in partnership with the German Development Agency (GIZ) to empower people with disabilities (PWDs) in the fashion industry.
The initiative aims to provide skills training and economic opportunities to 50 beneficiaries, enabling them to succeed in the fashion sector.
Beneficiaries will receive a guaranteed market for their products and access to a shop to facilitate sales, ensuring a sustainable income stream.
Existing fashion entrepreneurs and startups will also benefit from the program, receiving skills training, business development, and financial literacy support to enhance their operations.
YEA’s Chief Executive, Kofi Baah Agyapong, emphasized the agency’s commitment to supporting PWDs, highlighting the establishment of disability desks in all 266 YEA offices.
Additionally, 282 PWDs have been recruited as district disability officers, demonstrating YEA’s dedication to inclusivity.
The YEA will provide a state-of-the-art facility for training and a skills and fashion hub, serving as both a training center and garment production center.
Through the partnership, beneficiaries will receive modern electric sewing machines and a guaranteed market for their products, ensuring they have the tools and support needed to succeed.
Wilhelm Hugo, Head of Program for GIZ’s Decent Work for a Just Transition initiative, emphasized the importance of creating decent jobs and improving working conditions, highlighting the partnership’s significance in achieving these goals.
The two-year project will begin with a pilot training program, with plans to expand to other sectors and participants in the future, promoting inclusivity and economic growth.
