Akufo-Addo’s Ministerial Committee on Galamsey Has Failed to Achieve Its Purpose -GNAT
- GNAT rejects Akufo-Addo's galamsey committee
- Committee members too busy with elections, says GNAT
- GNAT demands state of emergency and equipment removal
- Special court for galamsey prosecution, GNAT urges
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has expressed strong reservations about the newly constituted ministerial committee on galamsey.
President Akufo-Addo recently announced a five-memberministerial committee to assess government efforts in combating galamsey. The committee, chaired by National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah, includes four other ministers.
However, GNAT believes the committee’s efforts will be futile, as most members are preoccupied with upcoming elections.
GNAT argues that the ministers will have little time to engage with stakeholders and address galamsey issues. The association also questions the committee’s ability to bring new solutions to the table.
GNAT has made five demands to tackle galamsey, including declaring a state of emergency and evacuating mining equipment from forest reserves.
The association also calls for the revocation of mining licenses in protected areas and the deployment of security forces to remove mining equipment.
GNAT urges the government to establish a special court to prosecute those involved in illegal mining activities.
