“Ohemaa Mercy Lied About Hearing God’s Voice For Her Divorce” – Brother Sammy

Gospel musician Brother Sammy has publicly criticized fellow Gospel artist Ohemaa Mercy’s assertion that God directed her to divorce her husband, Isaac Twum Ampofo, following three months of prayer during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

In an appearance on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo show with Nana Romeo on September 11, 2024, Brother Sammy articulated his disapproval of Ohemaa Mercy’s approach while acknowledging that divorce can be appropriate in certain situations.

Brother Sammy challenged the prevalent Christian belief that God disapproves of divorce under all circumstances. He questioned the premise that God plays a role in orchestrating marriages, stating, “God does not roam to find a woman for a man to marry… You found your partner at the club, party, funeral, etc., and married them.”

He advocated for the consideration of divorce in cases of abuse, advising, “If your life is under attack in your marriage, run,” and highlighted that marriage is not an eternal institution. “Marriage is one of the things we’ll leave behind when we die,” he emphasized.

Despite his stance on divorce, Brother Sammy vehemently rejected Ohemaa Mercy’s claim that she received divine instruction to end her marriage. He asserted, “Ohemaa Mercy lied about hearing God’s voice asking her to divorce her husband. It’s never true but lies.”

Brother Sammy speculated that Ohemaa Mercy’s desire for personal freedom might be the underlying reason for her decision, suggesting she sought independence from the constraints of marriage. “This is hypocrisy… She has a house and now seeks independence to enjoy life. You see, marriage is a cage,” he remarked, criticizing the notion that her decision was divinely ordained.

He also dismissed an audience member’s suggestion that he should support Ohemaa Mercy, clarifying that he disagreed with her approach despite their shared profession in the Gospel industry.
