- Coalition to petition Bawumia, Mahama on galamsey.
- Demands state of emergency and law enforcement.
- Seeks revocation of LI 2462 permits.
- Aims to unite against environmental destruction.
The Media Coalition against Galamsey has announced plans to petition Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and John Dramani Mahama.
The coalition seeks a public declaration from the two leading presidential candidates against illegal mining activities (galamsey).
Convener Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey emphasized that the illegality of mining is not related to its scale.
He clarified that the coalition is not calling for a ban on all mining activities.
Instead, they demand a state of emergency and enforcement of Ghana’s mining laws.
The coalition aims to address the environmental destruction and water pollution caused by galamsey.
Ashigbey explained that the NDC and NPP passed LI 2462 in Parliament, which permits mining in forest reserves.
The coalition demands the revocation of this LI and its replacement with a new one.
The next move will be to urge Bawumia and Mahama to declare their stance against galamsey.
This effort seeks to depoliticize the issue and ensure a united front against galamsey.
