The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is calling for the urgent arrest and prosecution of Pius Hadzide, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for Asuogyaman, following his recent public confession about facilitating travel to the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.
The NDC is also demanding Hadzide’s removal from his role as Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA).
This push comes in the wake of Hadzide’s admission, which has ignited controversy, particularly as he campaigns for a parliamentary seat.
Hadize’s admission has been met with criticism from the NDC, who argue that his actions are not only unethical but also undermine his suitability for public office.
They assert that his disclosure points to misuse of authority and potential risk to his constituents if elected.
In his campaign, Hadzide has promised to replicate such opportunities for international travel for his voters, specifically pledging to arrange trips to the U.S. for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This commitment, highlighted in a viral video, has sparked a range of reactions from the public.
Despite his assurances and past experience in the sports ministry, the NDC is unconvinced and insists that Hadzide’s previous role in facilitating questionable travels needs thorough scrutiny.
Malik Basintale, Deputy National Communications Officer of the NDC, has demanded that the authorities act quickly to investigate and prosecute Hadzide to prevent any further misuse of state resources.
“Given Hadzide’s own admission of guilt in the Australian Visa Scandal, it is imperative that he be held accountable and prosecuted without delay,” Basintale stated during a press conference on September 12.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games visa scandal involved Ghanaians posing as journalists to gain entry into Australia, leading to their deportation.
Despite Hadzide’s denial of any involvement, the government’s investigation cleared him of wrongdoing, though the outcome remains contentious.
