President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has taken a significant step towards addressing the growing concern of illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, by setting up a five-member ad hoc ministerial committee.
The committee’s primary objective is to engage stakeholders and assess the government’s efforts in dealing with galamsey, which has gained notoriety in recent times.
Many unions and associations have been demanding that President Akufo-Addo declare a state of emergency to provide ample time to deal with the menace.
Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar issued a notice on Friday, September 13, announcing the National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, as the chairman of the committee.
The committee will be assisted by four other ministers, who will work together to engage all stakeholders and assess the government’s efforts in dealing with illegal mining in Ghana.
The five-member committee is led by National Security Minister, Hon. Albert Kan-Dapaah, who will be responsible for overseeing the committee’s activities.
Other members of the committee include Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor; Minister for Defense, Hon. Dominic Nitiwul; Minister for Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah; and Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar.

The committee will engage with various stakeholders, including local communities, miners, and environmental groups, to assess the government’s efforts and identify areas for improvement.
By setting up this committee, President Akufo-Addo has demonstrated his commitment to addressing the issue of galamsey and finding sustainable solutions to the problem.
