- He blamed the government's inaction on galamsey for worsening environmental damage
Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, a key member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Manifesto Committee, has pledged that no party member will participate in illegal mining activities.
Asserting the NDC’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources, especially its forests and water bodies, Ankrah urged members with intentions of engaging in galamsey to reconsider, as such actions will be strictly prohibited under an NDC administration.
Mr. Ankrah emphasized the necessity of suspending all illegal mining operations for at least one year to allow the country’s water bodies and forest reserves to recover. He also promised thorough investigations and prosecutions for any party members caught violating these standards.
Speaking in an interview, Ankrah criticized the current administration’s handling of illegal mining, accusing them of neglect and deliberate inaction.
He claimed that the government’s failure to address galamsey effectively is part of a broader, orchestrated effort to worsen the situation.
He further suggested that the rampant galamsey issue should prompt voters to reconsider their support for the current government, asserting that its inability to tackle this pressing problem underscores a broader failure.
