The Circuit Court in Kwabenya has rescheduled the case of Newwel Gavu to September 18, 2024.
The delay, requested by the Attorney General, allows time for the submission of Gavu’s mental evaluation results.
Gavu, who was filmed damaging the Big Six statues at Kotoka International Airport, was ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment by the court on September 2, 2024.
As of the Tuesday morning court session, the mental health report had not yet been filed.
The investigator’s absence was noted, but state attorney Natalie Korkor Hammond explained that the decision to proceed with the prosecution hinges on the outcome of the mental health evaluation. Hammond told reporters, “We are waiting for the results to decide how to move forward. His behavior in court previously was unusual, prompting the judge to request a psychiatric evaluation.”
Gavu was apprehended on August 31, 2024, by airport police after he was seen vandalizing the busts of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the other Big Six members. The motives behind his actions remain unclear.
In response, the Ghana Airport Company Limited is working to replace the damaged monuments.
