Stop Calling Politicians, Pay Your Debts – ECG MD Warns

The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has expressed concern over the practice of debtors calling influential political personalities to intervene when ECG officials come to collect debts.

According to Mr. Mahama, this practice must stop, as electricity issues should not be politicized.

He appealed to the public to refrain from politicizing power, emphasizing that individuals should take responsibility for their debts.

Mr. Mahama also addressed the issue of acquiring meters, cautioning the public against relying on middlemen, commonly known as “goroboys”.

He explained that the system has been digitized to make it easier for individuals to acquire meters and document their properties.

When asked about the duration of the meter acquisition process, Mr. Mahama stated that it takes no more than seven days for a person to obtain a meter through the new service connection.

He highlighted the effectiveness of the online application process, which allows individuals to apply using the *226# short code.

Mr. Mahama warned against paying middlemen for meters, emphasizing that the public should use the approved channels, such as the ECG app or offices, to make payments.

He specified that the approved prices for meters are GHC 1200 for a single-phase meter and GHC 2300 for a three-phase meter, as set by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

By using the right channels, individuals can avoid unnecessary delays and ensure a smooth process for acquiring meters and resolving electricity issues.
