The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared the results of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Walewale parliamentary primary rerun invalid.
This action follows an incident where an individual disrupted the sorting process and destroyed a significant portion of the ballots.
Gabriel Manu, the Electoral Commissioner for Walewale, briefed the media on Monday, revealing that the party must now determine the next course of action.
“We proceeded with the voting, which went smoothly. After the voting concluded, we began sorting the ballots. Just as we were about to complete the sorting and start the counting, an unidentified man intervened, seized the ballots, and damaged most of them,” Manu explained.
“The police apprehended the individual, who is currently in custody. We managed to salvage some of the damaged ballots,” he added.
“After consulting with both parties involved, it became clear that the extent of the damage made it impossible to accurately determine votes for either candidate. Consequently, we had to halt the process and await further instructions from the party. We were unable to declare a winner today,” Manu said.
In the aftermath, the Ghana Police Service has reestablished order in Walewale following the disruption during the vote-counting. Kamara Bawah, the suspect responsible for the ballot destruction, is in police custody and cooperating with the investigation.
Enhanced security measures are now in place in Walewale and surrounding regions to ensure public safety and order.
