The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has strongly condemned recent attacks on its personnel while they were carrying out their duties.
In two separate incidents, firefighters were subjected to physical and verbal assaults, prompting the GNFS to vow to take strict legal action against the perpetrators.
According to a statement released by the GNFS on Tuesday, September 10, ADO II Abdul Aziz Annor, a firefighter from the Ministries Fire Station, was attacked on September 3, 2024.
The incident occurred while Annor was replenishing the station’s fire truck at the La Palm T-Junction in Accra, resulting in a fractured ankle.
The suspects, a driver and his mate, were arrested and granted bail on September 9, 2024, with court proceedings scheduled for October 24.
In a similar incident two days later, firefighters from the Dansoman Fire Station were verbally and physically assaulted by residents while responding to a fire near the Dansoman Roundabout.
Despite the attack, the firefighters managed to contain the blaze with the assistance of additional fire trucks.
The GNFS has emphasized that assaulting firefighters is a criminal offense and will not be tolerated, assuring that it will provide necessary care for the injured firefighter and take all necessary legal steps to ensure justice.
The Dansoman Police is currently investigating the matter to bring the perpetrators to justice, and the GNFS has urged the public to support and respect its personnel who risk their lives daily to protect communities.
The GNFS remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its personnel while they carry out their critical duties to protect lives and properties.
