Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has revealed that over 850 individuals are facing prosecution for their alleged involvement in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
This announcement comes amidst growing concerns over the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves.
Speaking at the 2024/2025 annual general conference of the Ghana Bar Association, Yeboah Dame disclosed that 140 cases of illegal mining are being investigated across five regions.
The regions affected by galamsey include Western, Eastern, Ashanti, Greater, and Upper East, with prosecutors working to bring perpetrators to justice.
Yeboah Dame highlighted the challenges faced by prosecutors in court, but emphasized that progress has been made in combating galamsey.
Since August 2021, 76 convictions have been secured, including that of notorious Chinese galamsey queen, Aisha Huang.
The Attorney General assured that the government is committed to tackling the galamsey menace, with stiff penalties imposed on convicts.
Non-Ghanaians found guilty of galamsey face minimum sentences of 15 years and hefty fines, while Ghanaians face minimum sentences of 20 years and fines.
Yeboah Dame expressed confidence that the judiciary will continue to play a crucial role in combating illegal mining, with some cases nearing conclusion.
The government’s efforts to combat galamsey demonstrate its commitment to protecting Ghana’s environment and natural resources.
