IES Warns Gov’t of Potential Pitfalls in VRA-Bui Power Merger

- IES cautions gov't on VRA, Bui Power merger.
- IES advises strengthening institutions, not dismantling.
- Draft bill proposes merger and new Thermal Power Authority.
- VRA staff oppose merger, warn of severe consequences.
The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has issued a cautionary statement to the government, urging it to halt plans to merge four key power sector institutions.
The proposed merger involves Volta River Authority (VRA), Bui Power Authority, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
According to IES, the risks associated with the merger far outweigh its benefits in its current form.
The Executive Director of IES, Nana Amoasi VII, explained that strengthening the existing institutions is crucial, rather than dismantling them.
Nana Amoasi VII emphasized that the focus should be on stabilizing and strengthening VRA, Bui Power Authority, ECG, and NEDCo.
He urged the government to reconsider the draft bill proposing the merger and instead work towards solutions that preserve Ghana’s energy security.
The IES statement follows a draft bill proposing the merger of VRA with Bui Power Authority and the combination of ECG with NEDCo.
Additionally, the bill proposes the establishment of an independent Thermal Power Authority.
Staff members of VRA have also expressed strong opposition to the proposed draft bill, arguing it is not in the best interest of Ghanaians.
They warn that the decisions could have severe consequences for VRA and the nation, emphasizing the need for careful consideration.
