Australian police are collaborating with international authorities to track down a man they believe fled the country after a shocking incident in Brisbane, where he poured boiling coffee on a nine-month-old baby. The attack, which occurred last month, left the child with severe burns to his face and limbs.

Queensland Police have issued an arrest warrant for the 33-year-old suspect, who faces charges of intent to cause grievous bodily harm, potentially punishable by life imprisonment. On Monday, police revealed that the suspect flew out of Sydney six days after the attack, just 12 hours before they could confirm his identity.

On August 31, a nine-month-old baby was attacked while at a suburban park in Brisbane. Witnesses reported that a “strange man” approached the family and poured boiling coffee from a flask onto the infant before fleeing on foot. Immediate first aid was administered, and an off-duty nurse took the child to her nearby apartment to run the burns under cold water.

Despite these prompt actions, the baby suffered severe burns requiring multiple surgeries. His parents have shared that his recovery will be long and challenging. Detective Inspector Paul Dalton described the case as one of the “most complex and frustrating” he has led, with the motive behind the attack still unclear.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for the suspect, a 33-year-old itinerant worker who had been traveling to Australia since 2019. They have confirmed the suspect’s identity and know which country he has fled to. However, details are being withheld to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation.

Detective Inspector Dalton noted that the suspect had been aware of police methods and engaged in counter-surveillance to evade capture. The man had addresses in both New South Wales and Victoria and had repeatedly traveled throughout Australia.

The baby’s parents expressed their heartbreak over the suspect’s escape but felt relief that he is no longer in the country. They are concerned about the extended wait for justice and how the escape will impact their pursuit of it. The baby is reported to be in “good spirits” but may require further skin graft surgeries.

In response to the attack, a GoFundMe page has been set up for the baby, raising over A$150,000 (approximately $100,000). The funds will aid in covering medical expenses and support the family during this difficult time.
