  • Whittal supports declaring a state of emergency
  • He emphasizes that the President’s failure to act undermines his credibility

Joseph Whittal, the head of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has sharply criticized President Akufo-Addo for his inadequate response to the illegal mining crisis, known as ‘galamsey.’

In an interview, Mr. Whittal voiced his profound disappointment over the President’s failure to deliver on his commitment to tackle the illegal mining issue, which has wreaked havoc on Ghana’s environment and threatens public health.

Mr. Whittal highlighted the significant repercussions of the President’s unfulfilled promises, stressing that the severe health impacts make this a particularly grave issue.

“The Commission is deeply disheartened by the lack of progress in addressing galamsey and artisanal mining. It’s disheartening to see the President, someone who should uphold his pledges, failing so profoundly,” Mr. Whittal remarked.

He also supported calls for declaring a state of emergency, arguing that the situation’s urgency warrants immediate action.

“I agree with those calling for a state of emergency. The pollution and its effects are alarming, yet the government seems indifferent. I can’t understand the delay,” Mr. Whittal said.

“The President, who has significant human rights credentials, should take decisive action before his tenure ends. This is a clear disappointment for the government and the President,” he concluded.
