Kwaku Ansah Asare, former Director of the Ghana School of Law, is demanding the impeachment of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo due to his failure to tackle illegal mining, or “galamsey,” which continues to devastate the country.

Ansah Asare’s call for impeachment stems from the President’s broken promise to eliminate galamsey, which has caused severe environmental and social damage. In a recent interview, Ansah Asare expressed frustration with the ongoing crisis.

“The President should have been impeached long ago. He made a public commitment that his job would be on the line if he failed to address galamsey effectively. Yet, he remains in office while the problem persists,” Ansah Asare asserted.

He further criticized the involvement of government ministers in illegal mining, suggesting that if the President were truly uninvolved, a solution would have been found by now.

Ansah Asare also took aim at Members of Parliament, condemning their defense of the government’s handling of galamsey as absurd.

He dismissed comparisons between the NDC and NPP governments’ impacts on the environment as misguided, arguing that such comparisons undermine the seriousness of the galamsey issue.

Despite various government efforts, including the creation of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) and military interventions, illegal mining continues to thrive due to corruption, inadequate enforcement, and the involvement of influential figures.

Ansah Asare’s comments reflect growing public frustration and calls for more effective action against this persistent menace.
