VRA Staff to Petition Akufo-Addo: ‘Stop the Bui Power Merger’
- VRA employees are strongly against the merger with Bui Power Authority
- They plan to use all legal avenues to block the proposed changes
- The staff aim to rally public support
The Volta River Authority (VRA) staff groups are gearing up to petition President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in response to a controversial proposal to merge the VRA with the Bui Power Authority, consolidate the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), and create a separate Thermal Power Authority from VRA’s thermal operations.
The staff members, who are strongly opposed to the merger, claim that the proposal is a covert scheme to transfer valuable assets to favored individuals.
Theophilus Tetteh Ahia, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of VRA, emphasized to Citi News that they are prepared to employ all legal avenues to block the merger.
“We, as Ghanaians, are key stakeholders and will leverage every legitimate means available to ensure that Ghanaians are not shortchanged,” Mr. Ahia declared.
“We refuse to sit idly by and watch as national assets are auctioned off to the highest bidder. We are committed to opposing this merger with all our might.”
The staff plan to petition the Trade Union Congress (TUC) as well, due to concerns that TUC has not been properly consulted. Their appeal to the President will stress their belief that the proposed changes are detrimental to the national interest.
“We want the public to know that we are firmly against this merger and the potential sale of VRA’s Thermal Plant,” Mr. Ahia concluded.
