Former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney has announced her support for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in the upcoming November election. Cheney stated on Wednesday that she is backing Harris due to the “danger” posed by Donald Trump, highlighting Harris’s alignment with conservative values and her commitment to the Constitution.
Cheney endorsed Harris during an event at Duke University in North Carolina, as shown in a video shared on social media platform X. Once a prominent figure in the Republican Party, Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, faced backlash after co-chairing the congressional panel investigating the January 6 Capitol assault. This led to her losing her congressional seat to a Trump-endorsed opponent in the 2022 Republican primary in Wyoming.
Jen O’Malley Dillon, Harris’s campaign chair, expressed pride in a statement on Wednesday night, highlighting that “the Vice President is proud to have earned Congresswoman Cheney’s vote.” Dillon praised Cheney as a patriot who prioritizes democracy and the Constitution.
Cheney’s endorsement aligns her with other Republicans who support Harris, including former January 6 committee members Adam Kinzinger and Denver Riggleman. Their backing underscores a broader trend of Republicans diverging from Trump’s influence.
Additionally, over 200 former officials from the Bush administration, as well as alumni from John McCain and Mitt Romney’s presidential campaigns, publicly endorsed Harris last week, reflecting a significant cross-party endorsement.
In response, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung dismissed Cheney’s endorsement, questioning her relevance with the comment, “Who is Liz Cheney and what does she do?”
