GES Launches Probe into O’Reilly SHS Tragedy

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has launched an investigation into the heartbreaking incident at O’Reilly Senior High School, where final-year student Edward Sackey tragically lost his life.

The GES has conveyed its deepest sympathies to Sackey’s family, friends, and the entire school community.

Edward Sackey, an 18-year-old student in the General Arts Department, was fatally injured in a stabbing incident on September 2, 2024.

The altercation occurred after Sackey had completed an exam and was reportedly involved in a dispute with a fellow student from the Visual Arts Department named Godwin.

On September 4, 2024, the Director-General of the GES, accompanied by a team, visited both the school and Sackey’s family to offer condolences and support.

The GES is collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

“We aim to complete our administrative investigation within two weeks while the Police Service conducts its criminal investigation,” stated Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of Public Relations for the GES. “Calm has been restored on campus, and we are committed to safeguarding the well-being of all students and staff.”

The GES remains dedicated to fostering a safe and supportive educational environment and is working diligently to prevent similar incidents in the future. They also requested the public’s patience and urged against speculation as investigations proceed. “We appreciate the public’s concern and will provide updates as necessary,” the statement concluded.
