The Black Stars of Ghana suffered a heartbreaking defeat in their opening AFCON 2025 qualifier against Angola, courtesy of a late winner from substitute Milson.
The Palancreas Negras’ victory at the Baba Yara Stadium on Thursday marked a rare loss for Ghana in their first qualifying match.
Otto Addo’s side struggled to break down Angola’s resolute defense in the first half, with Mohammed Kudus’ 33rd-minute effort being the only shot on target.
The second half saw Ghana dominate, but Kudus’ follow-up attempt and Antoine Semenyo’s well-struck shot were both denied by the Angolan goalkeeper.
As the game seemed destined for a draw, Milson’s introduction proved pivotal.
Despite being thwarted by Lawrence Ati-Zigi in the 78th minute, Milson eventually found the back of the net, silencing the home crowd.
Ghana’s late surge, including a header from Joseph Paintsil, proved futile as Angola held on for a 1-0 win.
