NDC Demands Public Apology from EC for Inflated Voter Register

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is urging the Electoral Commission (EC) to publicly apologize to Ghanaians for what they describe as a “bloated” voter register.

According to the NDC, the discrepancies in the register could jeopardize the fairness of the forthcoming elections and potentially disenfranchise many eligible voters.

At a press conference held in Accra on Monday, the EC admitted to the issue of an inflated voter register in the Ejumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency, attributing it to a clerical mistake.

The NDC had earlier alleged that the Commission had colluded with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to add over 3,000 voters to the register.

However, during the press briefing, Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of the EC, explained that the inflated numbers were due to the accidental inclusion of voter transfer lists from both 2020 and 2023.

On Wednesday, Dr. Tanko Rashid-Computer, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, expressed distrust in the EC and called for an external audit of the voter register.

He reiterated the party’s demand for the EC to issue an apology to the public.

“We don’t trust their internal investigation,” Dr. Rashid-Computer said. “We’re calling for an external body to review their work because this EC has proven unreliable in managing their own data.”

He added, “It appears they’ve mistakenly integrated 2020 transfer data into the current register, causing the inflation. They owe Ghanaians an apology.”
