Highlife musician Kuami Eugene has addressed questions about his relationship with legendary musician Amakye Dede in the wake of the recent Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) ‘King of Highlife’ crowning controversy. The discussion took place during an interview on Japekrom-based Anidaso FM.
When asked about the nature of his relationship with Amakye Dede before and after the VGMA event, Kuami Eugene appeared frustrated with the line of questioning. He suggested that the details of their backstage interactions were inconsequential. “My relationship with him backstage is of no value to anybody. Whether we fought or not, whether we were cool or not, I will forever regard him as a legend in my life,” Eugene stated.
The inquiry into their relationship was prompted by Amakye Dede’s recent interview, in which the veteran musician disclosed feeling pressured to crown Kuami Eugene as his successor at the VGMA ceremony. Amakye Dede had mentioned receiving the crown shortly before his performance and being instructed to endorse Kuami Eugene.
Despite the revelations, Kuami Eugene maintained a respectful stance, expressing that Amakye Dede has always been an inspiration to him. He underscored that due to the significant age difference and his respect for the Highlife icon, he would never engage in any conflict with him.
In his response, Kuami Eugene did not directly address Amakye Dede’s claims but emphasized that his admiration for the legendary musician remains steadfast, regardless of any backstage occurrences.
