Homes Swept Away by Tidal Waves in Ketu South

Story Highlights
  • Tidal waves destroy homes in Ketu South Municipality.
  • 15 households displaced, seeking shelter in churches.
  • Lack of sea defense system worsens impact.
  • Government inaction exacerbates coastal erosion crisis.

Tidal waves have devastated homes and livelihoods in Salakope, Amutinu, and adjoining communities in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta region.

About 15 households are currently seeking shelter in churches after their homes were destroyed by the tidal waves.

The annual occurrence of high tides along the Eastern coast of the country has become a recurring nightmare for residents.

Assembly Member Sylvester Kumawu noted that the lack of a sea defense system has left the coast vulnerable to the impact of tidal waves.

Kumawu described the destruction caused by the tidal waves, stating that homes along the beaches have been destroyed, and properties have been taken away.

The tidal waves have also submerged farm animals, boats, and fishing nets, resulting in significant losses for the affected communities.

The displaced residents are currently seeking shelter in churches and with friends and family elsewhere.

The government initiated feasibility studies into coastal erosion two years ago, but no concrete actions have been taken.

Kumawu called for immediate intervention to sustain livelihoods and protect the communities from future tidal wave disasters.

The situation highlights the need for urgent measures to address coastal erosion and protect vulnerable communities.
