Two separate cases in Bekwai, Ashanti Region, have resulted in lengthy prison sentences for ex-convicts.
In the first incident, a 20-year-old man, Akwasi Agyemang, was sentenced to 25 years in prison with hard labor for robbery.
Agyemang had broken into the home of an 8-month pregnant teenager in Feyiase, threatened her with a weapon, and robbed her. He also allegedly raped the victim.
The victim raised an alarm, leading to Agyemang’s arrest by neighbors.
He was charged with robbery and rape, and while he pleaded guilty to the robbery charge, the rape case is still under investigation.
In a separate case, a 23-year-old tricycle rider, Kwabena Ofori, was sentenced to nine years in prison for causing harm to a driver in Beposo.
Ofori, who had a history of threatening the victim due to suspicions about his younger brother, carried out the attack and fled.
After a police investigation and unsuccessful attempts to locate Ofori, he was eventually arrested upon his release from prison for a previous offense.
Ofori pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to nine years in prison.
Both cases highlight the ongoing challenges faced by communities in the region and the importance of justice in such situations.
