Two off-duty police constables have been remanded in custody by an Accra Circuit Court after they allegedly assaulted an Okada rider and stole GH¢3,700.
General Lance Corporals Philmon Agbevem and Peter Kwame Badagbor, who are both assigned to the Accra Central District Police Command, face charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and robbery.
The accused reportedly compelled the complainant, Emmanuel Amertodor, to transfer money from his mobile phone to another phone registered under the name Hope Alorvordzi. The officers, represented by their lawyer, Andy Vortia, have denied all allegations.
The case will be heard again on September 10, 2024, before Judge Evelyn Asamoah.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kofi Anane, the incident occurred on July 21, 2024. The officers, riding a motorcycle with registration number GP 8145, stopped the complainant at the Christ the King traffic light.
They were in uniform and armed with a rifle, alleging that the complainant and his pillion rider had stolen a purse from a lady at the National Theatre.
The prosecution states that after apprehending the complainant, the officers beat him severely, handcuffed him, and forcibly transferred GH¢3,700 from his phone to a number linked to Hope Alorvordzi. They also stole GH¢120 from him.
The complainant later reported the incident to the Police at Cantonments and the Criminal Investigations Department for further investigation. The accused were arrested on August 8, 2024, and while they admitted to detaining the complainant, they deny the robbery charges.
