The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned Samuel Atta Akyea, the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, for his disparaging remarks about John Dramani Mahama, the party’s flagbearer. Atta Akyea accused Mahama of being a drunkard and alcoholic during a mini-rally held on August 27, 2024.
In a statement released on August 29, 2024, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC’s General Secretary, denounced Atta Akyea’s comments as “reckless and unfounded.” The NDC criticized these remarks for undermining the integrity of political discourse and reflecting the NPP’s apparent desperation as the election approaches.
The NDC defended Mahama, asserting that he is a respected statesman dedicated to Ghana’s progress. The party highlighted Mahama’s impressive public service record and leadership qualities, emphasizing that his commitment to the country is unquestionable.
The party has demanded an immediate retraction and apology from Atta Akyea. The NDC warned that failure to comply will compel them to take all necessary actions to defend their flagbearer’s reputation and integrity.
Additionally, the NDC urged the NPP to ensure their campaign is conducted with respect and focus on meaningful issues. The party called for a clean and constructive dialogue that addresses the genuine concerns of the Ghanaian electorate.
