- The party denounces the remark as "reckless"
- The NDC warns of taking further action if Atta Akyea does not retract his statement
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly denounced remarks made by Samuel Atta Akyea, the MP for Abuakwa South, who labeled the party’s flagbearer, John Mahama, as a “drunkard.”
Atta Akyea’s comments, made during a mini-rally on August 27, 2024, have incited significant backlash from the NDC. In response, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC’s General Secretary, condemned the statements as “reckless and baseless.”
“For the record, H.E. John Dramani Mahama is not a drunkard. He is a distinguished statesman whose dedication to Ghana’s progress is beyond question. His exemplary public service and leadership are well-recognized,” Kwetey asserted.
The NDC criticized the remarks as undermining political decorum and reflecting the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) desperation in the run-up to elections. The party commended Mahama’s leadership and demanded an immediate retraction and apology from Atta Akyea.
“Hon. Atta Akyea must promptly retract his statements and apologize for his unwarranted attack on H.E. John Dramani Mahama. If he fails to do so, we will have no choice but to take all necessary steps to uphold the integrity and reputation of our Flagbearer,” the NDC’s statement read.
The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to a campaign centered on constructive ideas and solutions, urging the NPP leadership to ensure their campaign remains respectful and focused on addressing voter concerns.
