Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, has committed to deploying 50,000 CCTV cameras across key cities in Ghana as part of a plan to strengthen security and tackle crime.
He made this announcement during a campaign event in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency.
Dr. Bawumia explained that security assessments have revealed a need for 50,000 cameras to effectively cover all major roads in regional and district capitals. While acknowledging the government’s efforts in installing some CCTV cameras, he noted that comprehensive coverage has not yet been achieved.
In addition to improving security, Dr. Bawumia advocated for a “Buy Ghana First” initiative to boost local employment by encouraging Ghanaians to purchase domestically produced goods, which he believes will foster business growth and job creation.
During his campaign, Dr. Bawumia engaged with local religious leaders and traditional chiefs in the Ashongman Estate area. Former Speaker of Parliament Mike Ocquaye lauded Dr. Bawumia for his intellectual prowess and significant contributions to the party, referencing his role in handling election-related issues and his reputation as “Mr. Pink Sheet.”
Dr. Bawumia highlighted the NPP government’s accomplishments and underscored the necessity for enhanced security measures. He revealed that he had consulted with national security officials who determined that 50,000 CCTV cameras are needed. He assured that this goal will be met to provide the police with greater surveillance capabilities, compensating for the limited number of officers.
