- Pan-African Youth Orchestra takes stage on September 1 with African music
- Two nights of live music in Accra featuring Ambolley and PAYO
Accra’s renowned +233 Jazz Bar and Grill will present two distinct musical experiences this weekend, showcasing diverse styles on both Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1.
On Saturday, the spotlight will be on celebrated Ghanaian singer, composer, and saxophonist Gyedu Blay Ambolley, who will take the stage with his Sekondi Band. Ambolley, known for his unique fusion of Highlife and Jazz, promises an engaging performance that reflects his diverse musical influences. “We certainly have enjoyable stuff up our sleeves for the upcoming gig and that’s why everyone should come by for a good time from 9.00 pm with our two surprise guests,” Ambolley said.
Ambolley, who developed his distinctive Simigwa rap and dance in Sekondi, has a long history of blending Highlife rhythms with Jazz elements. Despite recent plans for a 15-state tour of the United States being postponed to early 2025, he is eager to share the new material he and his band have prepared. The Sekondi Band recently toured across Europe, including the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and more, showcasing their dynamic performances internationally.
On Sunday, the Pan-African Youth Orchestra (PAYO) will take center stage at 8.00 pm, offering a concert of neo-classical African music. PAYO features a group of young, talented musicians who explore various dimensions of African music using instruments such as the Atenteben flute, gyile xylophone, kora, and a range of African drums, bells, and shakers.
PAYO has performed at prestigious festivals like MASA in Côte d’Ivoire and Felabration in Nigeria and has collaborated with prominent artists in South Africa, the United States, and Israel. The orchestra’s repertoire includes innovative interpretations of contemporary hits by Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Osibisa, with star kora player Seydou Diarra joining them as a guest performer.
