2024 Election: Voter Register Robust And Credible – EC

Story Highlights
  • The EC asserts that the 2024 voter register is both robust and credible
  • Former President John Dramani Mahama has criticized the EC
  • Mahama warns that unresolved problems could lead to confusion and disputes on election day

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has refuted assertions that there are issues with the voter register for the 2024 general elections.

In a post shared on its social media platforms, the commission stated that the 2024 Election Voter Register is not only robust but credible.

“The 2024 Voters Register is robust and credible. Ignore assertions that the Voters Register is not fit for the 2024 Elections,” the post reads.

The statement by the EC comes after members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) claimed that there are serious issues with the voter register.

The presidential candidate of the NDC, former President John Dramani Mahama, cautioned the EC on inaccuracies in the voter register, admonishing the election management body to “sit up” to avoid confusion, starrfm.com.gh reports.

According to him, the voter register has been saddled with missing names, unauthorised change of polling stations, and other clear violations of the country’s electoral laws.

“Recently, the Electoral Commission opened the register for people to inspect their names. I’m sorry to say there’s a lot wrong with that register. The EC has to sit up so that we don’t have any confusion on election day. The EC is an important institution in having peaceful elections in this country. So if the EC commissioners are listening to me; you better wake up.

“You’re not doing your job properly. A lot of people cannot find their names. Other people’s names have been transferred without their knowledge, and people have registered for proxy without using their biometric cards. People who have done multiple registrations, their names are still on the register,” he is quoted to have said at a rally at Amasaman in Accra.

Mahama added that while the NDC is a party of peace, its members are not going to stand idly by while they are being cheated.
