Parliamentary Sittings Moved to AICC Dome Temporarily – Bagbin

Story Highlights
  • Parliament temporarily relocates to AICC Dome.
  • Renovation work delays main chamber's availability.
  • Speaker's decision is backed by constitutional authority.
  • Relocation is temporary until renovations are complete.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has made a significant announcement regarding the upcoming parliamentary session. In a letter dated August 27, 2024, Speaker Bagbin revealed that the session, set to reconvene on September 3, will take place at the Dome at the International Conference Centre.

This decision marks a departure from the traditional proceedings at Parliament’s main chamber, which has been the usual location for Ghana’s legislative activities. The main chamber has been the hub of parliamentary activities, but it will not be the case for the upcoming session.

The Speaker’s decision is backed by the constitution, specifically Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution. This article grants the Speaker the authority to designate an alternative meeting place for Parliament when necessary.

The primary reason for this relocation is the ongoing renovation work in the main chamber of Parliament. The renovation project is extensive and will not be completed in time for the scheduled recall.

The renovation work includes significant updates to the Chamber’s infrastructure. Improvements will be made to the working tables, chairs, and other furnishings essential for the day-to-day operations of the legislative body.

These repairs are crucial to ensure a conducive working environment for the lawmakers. However, they cannot be completed in time for the upcoming session, necessitating the temporary relocation. The Dome at the International Conference Centre has been chosen as the alternative venue. This venue has the necessary facilities to accommodate the parliamentary session.

Speaker Bagbin’s decision ensures that parliamentary activities continue uninterrupted. The relocation is temporary, and the main chamber will be used again once the renovation is complete. The announcement has been made official, and necessary arrangements are being made to ensure a smooth transition. The parliamentary session will commence on September 3 at the new venue.

The relocation demonstrates the Speaker’s commitment to ensuring that parliamentary activities continue without disruption. It also highlights the importance of maintaining a conducive working environment for the lawmakers.
