Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has criticized former President John Mahama for allegedly evading a presidential debate ahead of the December elections.
Dr. Bawumia contends that Mr. Mahama is avoiding the debate because he is concerned about his record being scrutinized.
As Dr. Bawumia prepares to face Mahama in the upcoming elections, he has publicly challenged his opponent to a debate. Despite this, Mr. Mahama has not accepted the invitation.
Speaking to supporters in Dansoman, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his stance, suggesting that Mr. Mahama’s reluctance to debate stems from his awareness of a disappointing performance during his presidency.
“The former President knows he cannot compete because our achievements in every sector of the economy far surpass his,” Dr. Bawumia told the crowd.
“If he believes his performance in any area was better, he should accept the debate challenge. But he is avoiding it out of fear of exposing his poor record,” Dr. Bawumia added, prompting enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Dr. Bawumia also highlighted what he termed as Mr. Mahama’s “poor record,” citing issues such as four years of power outages, lack of resources for schools, opposition to Free SHS, and the cancellation of allowances for teacher and nursing trainees.
“We have not forgotten these failures. While the previous administration failed to supply basic resources, our government has advanced with digitalization and provided laptops to senior high students. This is progress we intend to build upon,” Dr. Bawumia concluded.
