President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially initiated the reconstruction of the Accra-Tema motorway, a 19.5-kilometer stretch that will be modernized into a 10-lane expressway. The project, valued at $380 million, is a Public Private Partnership Agreement under a 30-year design, finance, build, operate, and maintain concession.
President Akufo-Addo described the ceremony as the beginning of a bold and innovative approach to infrastructure development, marking the first public-private partnership in Ghana’s road infrastructure history. The Accra-Tema Motorway, commissioned in 1965, has served as a vital artery for Ghana’s development for nearly six decades, carrying an average of 45,000 vehicles per day.
Designed with a 50-year lifespan, the road has withstood the test of time, but the Akufo-Addo-led government has deemed it necessary to renew this legacy to ensure its continued service to the people of Ghana.
The entire project encompasses the redevelopment of three critical sections of national road network, totaling over 27 kilometers of infrastructure that will enhance connectivity and economic viability across the country.
The first section of the project involves transforming the existing motorway into a modern 10-lane expressway, including key infrastructure upgrades such as interchanges, footbridges, and road rehabilitations. The total cost of the entire project scope of work is $660 million, with the government securing $380 million in equity and viability gap funding for the first phase.
President Akufo-Addo noted that the project will significantly improve travel times and reduce vehicle operating costs, expressing joy that the reconstruction and expansion of the Accra Tema Motorway is taking place during his tenure.
The Minister of Finance, Dr. Amin Adam, highlighted that the project will generate approximately 1,500 jobs over the next 36 months, enhancing connectivity, reducing travel time, improving safety, and creating jobs.
