The number of road accidents in the Ahafo Region has decreased between January and June of this year, according to Miss Indira Apronti, the Ahafo Regional Head of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA).
She reported that the region saw 58 crashes in 2024, down from 64 during the same period in 2023, marking a 22 percent reduction.
Fatalities also dropped from 23 in the first half of 2023 to 15 in 2024, a decrease of 35 percent. The number of vehicles involved in accidents fell from 101 to 87.
Despite these improvements, there was a notable rise in pedestrian accidents, with 20 reported cases in the first half of 2024 compared to eight in the same period of 2023, reflecting a 150 percent increase. Injuries also rose slightly from 96 to 103, a seven percent increase.
Ms. Apronti highlighted that the NRSA has ramped up road safety education through outreach programs in schools, churches, bus terminals, and local communities as part of the “Stay Alive” campaign.
Additionally, new District Road Committees have been established to enhance road safety education at the district level.
