Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) clashed violently in Asesewa, Upper Manya Krobo District, Eastern Region, resulting in several injuries.
The confrontation ignited after disagreements about the parking location of District Road Improvement Project (DRIP) machinery, which sparked frustration among NDC members.
Eyewitnesses reported that the altercation began when the DRIP equipment was parked at the NPP Parliamentary Candidate’s premises rather than the District Assembly. A viral social media video captured NDC members questioning the placement of the machines, which were adorned with NPP colors and posters.
According to Emmanuel Kwesi Larwer, the NDC communication officer for Upper Manya Krobo District, the machines were improperly positioned by the NPP candidate, prompting NDC supporters to protest. This led to a confrontation where stones were thrown, requiring police intervention to restore order. Larwer stated, “We attempted to show our support as well, given that it is government equipment.”
In defense, Benjamin Kwesi Odoi, the NPP communication officer, claimed that the NDC’s actions were unjustified. He explained that the machines were meant to be displayed for celebration before being moved to the District Assembly.
Kwesi Odoi said, “Our supporters were thrilled to see the equipment, and our plan was to parade it before parking it at the Assembly. The NDC’s attempt to obstruct us led to the violence.”
The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at Asesewa Government Hospital.
The DRIP initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Local Governance and Rural Development, aims to enhance road infrastructure in rural and semi-urban areas, which is vital for economic development and access to essential services.
