Story Highlights
  • Ghanaian migrant died while detained at Brazil's Guarulhos International Airport
  • The incident has highlighted concerns about the treatment of migrants at the airport
  • The Brazilian government is planning to tighten entry regulations

A Ghanaian migrant has tragically died while detained in a restricted section of Guarulhos International Airport in Brazil, following health complications.

The 39-year-old man, who was being held along with other undocumented travelers, received medical care at the airport’s medical station but succumbed on August 13. The precise cause of death remains unknown.

The incident has sparked concerns about potential human rights violations at the airport. Due to the high volume of migrants and insufficient infrastructure, many, including children and adolescents, are left sleeping on the floor and are deprived of basic necessities like food and water.

Migrants from countries such as India and Vietnam are particularly affected, often exhibiting flu-like symptoms according to airport authorities.

In response to the growing migratory pressures, the Brazilian government plans to implement stricter entry regulations to prevent migrants from using Brazil as a transit point to the USA and Canada.

The Public Defenders Office has urged for immediate improvements in the living conditions of migrants currently stranded at the airport while their legal status is processed.
