Novak Djokovic, aiming to break Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles, opened his US Open campaign with a comfortable victory over Radu Albot.
The Serbian star, already a 37-time Grand Slam champion, won the match 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.
Djokovic, who recently clinched Olympic gold in Paris, is seeking his first Grand Slam title of the year.
Despite his dominance in recent years, he has yet to secure a major trophy in 2024.
Before the match, Djokovic joked that he wanted to avenge his younger brothers, Djordje and Marko, who had both lost to Albot in the past. “I feel like there was so much at stake,” Djokovic said after the match. “I feel like there was revenge for my younger brothers.”
Djokovic will face fellow Serbian Laslo Djere in the second round on Wednesday.
