Deadly Floods Displace Thousands in Nigeria

Heavy rains have devastated parts of northeastern Nigeria, causing the deaths of at least 49 people and displacing thousands.

The National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) has reported that three states, Jigawa, Adamawa, and Taraba, have been particularly hard hit.

The floods have affected 41,344 people, with many forced to flee their homes.

This disaster comes just two years after Nigeria experienced its worst flooding in over a decade, which resulted in the deaths of more than 600 people.

NEMA spokesperson Manzo Ezekiel warned that the situation is likely to worsen as the rainy season progresses. “We are just entering into the peak of the season, particularly in the northern part of the country, and the situation is very dire,” he said.

The floods have also caused significant damage to farmland, affecting approximately 693 hectares of agricultural land.

This is a major blow to Nigeria, which is already struggling with double-digit inflation and rising food prices.

The ongoing conflict in the northeast has further exacerbated the crisis, as farmers have been forced to abandon their land due to repeated attacks by militants.

The government had previously warned that 31 of Nigeria’s 36 states were at risk of experiencing severe flooding this year.

According to NEMA, the recent floods are a clear indication of the government’s predictions.
