AshGold fans call for GFA to lift suspension.
- AshantiGold fans have appealed to the GFA to lift their team’s suspension.
- The suspension, linked to a 2021/22 match-fixing scandal, also demoted the club.
- Other sanctions have been reconsidered, but AshGold’s case remains unchanged
Fans of AshantiGold Soccer Club have formally appealed to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to lift the suspension currently imposed on their team. These dedicated supporters traveled from Obuasi to the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence in Prampram to present their plea directly to the GFA, timed to coincide with the 30th Ordinary Congress. Their visit underscores the urgency and passion with which they seek the club’s reinstatement.
The suspension of AshantiGold began in 2023 as a result of their involvement in a match-fixing scandal during the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season. The scandal, centered around a match against Inter Allies, not only led to AshGold’s suspension but also saw their demotion to a lower division, along with other sanctions against the involved parties.
While some of the sanctions imposed on other teams and individuals have been revisited and overturned, AshGold’s case has not seen similar reconsideration. The extended suspension has left the club in limbo, impacting not only the team but also its loyal fan base.
The supporters are now calling on the GFA to reevaluate their decision and lift the suspension. They argue that a resolution is overdue and hope that their appeal will prompt the governing body to facilitate the club’s return to competitive football, thereby restoring its place in the league and rejuvenating the local football community.
