Akufo-Addo Celebrates Progress with Tema Motorway Upgrade through Ghanaian-Led PPP

President Akufo-Addo has hailed the reconstruction of the nearly 60-year-old Tema Motorway as a progressive step, facilitated by Maripoma Enterprise Limited, a fully Ghanaian-owned firm, through a public-private partnership (PPP).

This initiative underscores the capability of local companies and marks a significant milestone in infrastructure development.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the project’s launch, President Akufo-Addo praised the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Attorney General, and the Ghana Investment Infrastructure Fund.

He lauded their dedication to creating a PPP model that effectively utilizes Ghanaian expertise for this essential road project.

The President expressed particular satisfaction that Maripoma Enterprise Limited is leading the first phase of the project, highlighting the firm’s competence and innovation. He emphasized that this development is a clear demonstration of his administration’s commitment to modernizing Ghana’s infrastructure.

President Akufo-Addo urged all involved parties to ensure the project is completed on schedule and within the allocated budget. He took pride in the fact that the reconstruction and expansion of the Tema Motorway is happening during his presidency, reflecting his government’s dedication to building a modern, prosperous, and well-connected Ghana.

Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, noted that the Tema Motorway project is historic as it represents Ghana’s first major PPP road initiative. The project spans 27.7 kilometers and is divided into three sections: the rehabilitation of the Accra-Tema Motorway (19.5 km), the George Walker Bush Highway (5.7 km), and the Nsawam Road from Tesano Junction to Neoplan Junction (2.5 km).

The upgrade will transform the Accra-Tema stretch into a modern 10-lane highway, designed to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance safety.

The comprehensive plan includes reconstructing key interchanges, constructing new toll plazas and footbridges, and widening significant road sections, all aimed at improving road infrastructure and traffic flow.
