The National Identification Authority (NIA) has revealed that over 100,000 Ghanaians are under investigation for attempting to register multiple times for the Ghana Card. Appearing before the Assurances Committee of Parliament, NIA’s Executive Secretary, Prof Kenneth Attafuah, provided an update on the registration process.
According to Prof Attafuah, approximately 18.2 million Ghanaians have been enrolled into the national registry. However, nearly 560,000 cards are yet to be issued, with 151,896 cleared and ready to be printed.
The NIA has identified 110,936 individuals who have attempted multiple registrations, which has led to their cards being flagged for investigation. The authority has extended its registration services to Ghanaians living abroad, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.
A pilot program will be launched in Ottawa, Canada, to test the technical system and register Ghanaians overseas. The registration process for Ghanaians abroad will be online, requiring applicants to apply, make payments, and present themselves physically.
Prof Attafuah explained that Canada was chosen as the pilot location due to its strategic importance and the presence of Ghanaians with the necessary documents. The NIA aims to ensure the integrity of the registration process and prevent multiple registrations, with investigations ongoing for those who have attempted to circumvent the system.
