The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has categorically denied allegations of planning a coup in the event of violent 2024 elections.
In a statement, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, reaffirmed GAF’s commitment to democracy and peace.
GAF has no intention of staging a coup, and will resist any attempt to unlawfully seize power, the statement emphasized.
The military urged civil society groups and the media to refrain from using GAF’s name to heighten political tension.
GAF called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure a peaceful and safe environment for the upcoming elections in December 2024.
The military reiterated its commitment to peace and tranquillity, encouraging citizens to feel free and safe to undertake their lawful activities.
This response comes after a publication attributed claims of a potential coup to Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG).
GAF clarified that they have never held a press conference declaring an intention to stage a coup, contrary to the publication’s claims.
The statement emphasized that GAF’s role is to support the Ghana Police Service upon request, not to overthrow the government.
