NRSA Raises Alarm Over Widows Created by Road Crashes
- The NRSA has identified a significant rise in the number of women widowed due to road accidents
- Men account for the majority of road fatalities
- The NRSA is urging women to become advocates for road safety
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has raised alarms about the growing number of widows caused by road accidents predominantly involving men.
Recent statistics from the NRSA reveal that men were responsible for about 79% of road fatalities from January to July 2024, while women made up 21%.
At the launch of the Road Safety Code of Practice for political activities in Accra, Daniel Wuaku, the NRSA’s Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation, called on women to step up as road safety advocates.
Wuaku highlighted the disproportionate impact of road accidents on women, who often face the devastating aftermath of losing their partners.
He stated, “Women account for only 21% of road deaths from January to July 2024, compared to 79% for men. This trend is leading to an increase in widowhood.”
He further urged, “It’s time for women to take a leading role in road safety advocacy. Since they are the ones most affected, their involvement is crucial in supporting our initiatives and saving lives.”
