The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has revealed its intention to reach out to Cynthia Morrison, the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, after her choice to contest the Agona West seat as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 elections.
NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong highlighted the party’s commitment to maintaining unity and its goal to “break the eight,” aiming to extend its governance beyond the typical two-term limit.
Morrison, who currently represents Agona West in Parliament, announced her independent run after a defeat in the NPP parliamentary primaries.
She emphasized her focus on Agona West’s development, stating, “God willing, I will be contesting the parliamentary election as an independent candidate. It is not about the NDC, and it is not about the NPP. It is about the development of Agona.”
Despite the loss in the primaries, Morrison remains dedicated to advancing Agona West and has urged her supporters to back her independent campaign.
Speaking in an interview, Kodua Frimpong stressed the NPP’s commitment to unity and its strategy to include all members, even those running independently. He noted, “Our aim for this election is to break the eight, which requires exceptional efforts and inclusivity. We are focused on ensuring that all our party members are involved. Therefore, our approach is to engage with those considering independent candidacies rather than focusing on formal communications alone. The party leadership will continue to work towards integrating everyone back into the fold.”
