- Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the sinking
Divers have discovered a body believed to be that of Mike Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, in the wreckage of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily.
This discovery confirms that all passengers reported missing in the incident have been located.
According to the Italian Coastguard, the sixth and final missing individual was found on Friday in the submerged Bayesian yacht. Vincenzo Zagarola of the Coastguard described the challenging search, likening the wreck to an “18-storey building full of water.”
The yacht sank early Monday morning, around 5am local time, carrying Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, Jonathan Bloomer of Morgan Stanley International, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, and his wife Neda Morvillo.
Prior to this discovery, five bodies had already been recovered and brought to Porticello, a small fishing village near Palermo. Among the 22 passengers and crew on board, 15—including Mr. Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares—were rescued after escaping on a lifeboat. The body of chef Recaldo Thomas was found at the scene on the day of the sinking.
The yacht was on a celebratory voyage marking Mr. Lynch’s recent acquittal in a US fraud case related to Autonomy’s $11 billion sale to Hewlett Packard. Although raising the sunken yacht is not currently planned, it may be considered in the future. The yacht’s captain, James Cutfield, is reportedly under investigation.
Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the yacht’s manufacturer, criticized the crew’s response to the approaching storm, questioning why passengers were still in their cabins.
Tributes have been paid to the victims, with many remembering Mr. Lynch as a visionary and kind individual.
Eleanor Lightbody, CEO of Luminance, praised his unique ability to anticipate technological advancements. The Bloomer family described Jonathan and Judy as inspirational figures who cherished their family deeply.
A comprehensive search involving helicopters, underwater drones, and divers was conducted.
The Bayesian remains submerged at a depth of 50 meters off Porticello.
A press conference by local prosecutors in Termini Imerese is scheduled for Saturday morning.
